Beverly is having a party. It’s 1977, Essex, and her suburban semi has been made ready for the party of the year, even if it is really only because the real party is happening back at Sue’s house. Abigail has invited the neighbours, put on her new frock, and has the Demis Roussos record on the turntable for later. And we are invited as well.

Awkward small talk quickly descends into inappropriate flirtation and marital disputes: a soiree from hell, but it’d be rude to leave…
This Mike Leigh classic is coming to the Theatre Royal, Brighton, in July for one week, with Tamzin Outhwaite (Eastenders, Red Cap, Hotel Babylon and New Tricks) leading the cast in this revival of the Stratford East production, which received stellar reviews during a sold-out run in 2024. The play provides a razor-sharp portrait of social class, materialism and sexual tension in 1970s England, and is an unmissable modern classic.

Tickets are available from the Theatre Royal, Brighton. This should be a night to remember.
