Guerrilla gardeners hit Brighton pavements

A group of guerrilla gardeners have made it their mission to brighten up Brighton pavements by planting flowers underneath roadside trees.

Fiveways guerilla gardeningCommunitree has started in Fiveways with these blooms planted round trees in Stanford Avenue and Rugby Road.

And it is asking for the public’s help in keeping them fresh by watering them, and also adding their own around the city.

The scheme is the work of artist Adam Johnson and graphic designer Dan Mackey. Dan said: “Autumn might be just around the corner, but that just serves as a perfect excuse to inject some colour with flowers into unused public spaces.

“We want to improve small, unused squares underneath trees and transform them into mini garden spaces that make people smile.

“With a little bit of help we can make something awesome.

“Water these thirsty chaps and see the flowers come to life. Add to the patches, make your own, and get involved with your Communitree.”

Well I just hope they’re planting native wildflowers and not any of that foreign muck, eh, wot?

Some trees have such a growth of unkempt weeds around them it would be an improvement to have something done with them. It must make life more difficult for dogs though!!

Those aren’t “unkempt weeds” they’re “wildflower micro-meadows”, a delight for pollinators.

You’re obviously one of these evil reptiloid types who are intent on bee genocide.

Feline1 that is a bit harsh. Are you one of those ladies with 200 cats? Given your attitude, sounds like you are!

This excellent improvement to the area has been going on for a couple of years in the adjacent Southdown Avenue.

    Love it.

There is nothing wrong with being a lady, nor with having 200 cats (not that I can lay claim to either, to be honest…)

I did my first bit of guerilla gardening this summer. I had been inspired by the mini gardens, under trees, that I came across on the Artists Open Houses trails this May. My contribution is under a tree outside 10 Richmond Road, Brighton. Whilst preparing the poor chalk filled soil a neighbour donated a bag of compost and another took the old soil to the tip. The plants were a collection put together to attract pollinators.

Good work, Sue. With such actions we may yet save the nation from bee genocide!

Great stuff! Southdown Rise Residents Association has been promoting exactly this for over a year, our members are currently looking after about 10 trees in our area and we have plans under way to further beautify the neighbourhood.
