The man who was pulled from the sea in Hove yesterday (Saturday 4 July) has died in hospital.
He was pulled from the water near the King Alfred by a beach lifeguard, having been spotted face down in the sea before disappearing from sight.
Crowds looked on as members of the RNLI Brighton lifeboat crew beached their boat and came ashore to help efforts to revive the man who was believed to be in his fifties.
Their efforts appear to have succeeded and the man was taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital by South East Coast Ambulance Service.
He was in a serious condition and was pronounced dead at the Royal Sussex.
Lifeboat helmsman Daniel Gurr said: “This was brilliant teamwork between Brighton beach lifeguards and the volunteer crew of Brighton lifeboat.
“I would also like to say my thanks to the 20 passers-by and beach lifeguard that assisted in getting the lifeboat back into the sea.”
The lifeboat was launched at 4.24pm to reports of a man face down in the water about 400 yards west of the West Pier.
Thousands of people were on the seafront at Hove Lawns, on the beach and in the water as the rescue and resuscitation took place during Paddle Round the Pier. Staff from the free beach festival also gave help during the incident.
