Cyclist leaves pedestrian in hospital with significant injuries

Adil Elyas

A man is in hospital with significant injuries more than a week after he was knocked over by a hit-and-run cyclist.

Adil Elyas was crossing Western Road, in Brighton, close to the Waitrose bus stop, when he was hit.

Sussex Police issued an appeal for witnesses, information and camera footage today (Wednesday 23 April).

The force said: “Just after 4pm on Tuesday 15 April, a man in his fifties was reported to have been hit by a cyclist while crossing Western Road, in Brighton, near to the Waitrose bus stop.

“The bike, which may have been electric, did not stop at the scene, and inquiries to locate the rider are ongoing.

“The victim sustained significant injuries in the collision and remains in hospital at this time.

“Anyone who has footage from the area at the time of the collision or who has information to assist police in establishing the circumstances is asked to make a report.

“We also ask that if you believe you were involved in the incident, you contact police.

“You can do this by emailing collision.appeal@sussex.police.uk, or by calling 101 quoting reference 840 of 15/04.”

Luckily we spend all that money on CCTV to enable detection and prosecution?

In all probability the cyclist will have been dressed entirely in black and wearing a mask, balaclava and hoody so, in the absence of any number plate, will be totally unidentifiable.

Bingo – an idiot does an absolutely terrible thing and then someone mentions number plates.

Could you provide reasonable suggestions about plate size, plate location, whether we register cycle or rider, cyclist age when registration is mandatory, other countries or localities that have registration plates for cycles, how success or otherwise of the registration was measured, the results and so on?

Also, do we register skateboards, roller skates, mobility scooters and anything else with one or more wheels that you can conjure?

Yet again a hysterical pro-cyclist takes offence at any suggestion that something needs be done about the dangerous and aggressive attitude of many cyclists.
Why is that that they will never accept responsibility for their actions but rant and rave at the slightest criticism?
