New Brighton parking zone delayed by missing ticket machines

The start of Brighton and Hove’s newest controlled parking zone will be delayed for two weeks after pay and display machines failed to turn up in time.

The new Zone E, which includes Maldon Road, Matlock Road, Tivoli Crescent North and Tivoli Road just west of Preston Park Station, was due to come into force this morning – but when residents looked outside, no ticket machines were to be seen.

Brighton and Hove City Council said there had been an “unforeseen delay” in the delivery of the machines for a small number of shared spaces.

A spokeswoman added: “Residents permits in the area will automatically be extended by a month to compensate for the delay.”

The new zone has proved controversial since it was first proposed following an exact 50/50 split in reply to a consultation about introducing  a scheme to combat parking problems in the area last autumn.

Some residents are angry that those consulted included people living in adjoining Dyke Road, which is not included in the area, but whose householders are allowed to apply for permits – to date, none have.

Earlier this week, Tivoli Road resident Chris Moore said he and his neighbours were also angry that cars were damaged and the local lay priest threatened with arrest during work to install signage and road painting, which continued over the bank holiday weekend.

Mr Moore said today: “It must now also be time for one or other of our political parties to say ‘Enough is enough’ in this unfunny comedy of errors: an absolute disgrace, on every level.”

Brighton used to be great, it is my home town. Now live in london where Parking in parts of london is now easier than parking in Brighton. Such a shame.
