A cyclist and e-scooter rider both ended up in hospital with serious injuries after crashing on a cycle lane in Roedean.
Police today appealed for witnesses to the crash, which happened at about 9.40pm on Wednesday, September 11 in Marine Drive at the junction of Roedean Road.
Anyone who witnessed the collision or has dash cam footage is asked to contact police by emailing collision.appeal@sussex.police.uk, using the police online reporting form, or by calling 101 quoting reference 461 of 12/09.
Considering this is a shared pedestrian-cycle lane and that the eScooter is illegal to be used on any public roads, I hope the scooter rider is found to be at fault, is charged with several offences, and has his machine scrapped.
Let’s also hope that both riders fully recover from this totally unnecessarily collision.

I take it you are an eScooter owner/rider who arrogantly thinks traffic laws and regulations do not apply as you are “helping the environment” and it’s all the government’s fault for not legalising their use.
Madrid, Paris and Melbourne have banned eScooters already.
Incorrect again, Madrid Paris and Melbourne have not banned e scooters. They have banned rentals, big difference and the reason for it was because they were left blocking pavements… Get your facts straight before you start a rant you clearly know nothing about

Whilst I am certainly in agreement about keeping an open mind about things, unless one of the injuried parties was walking their vehicle, which is mitigated by why are you walking in the cycle lane, the blame does seem to pointing towards the e-scooter owner, as the law is very clear about their usage.
It’s a very basic path and doesn’t deserve the title of ‘shared pedestrian cycle lane’. It’s location is excellent and heavily used but it’s too narrow for 2 way traffic. An accident waiting to happen. I wish them both a speedy recovery.
As a cyclist, I am aware that pedestrians take priority on all shared pedestrian/cycle paths and act accordingly. Also as a cyclist on Lewes Road, I have encountered escooters whizzing past me silently at close to 20mph and coming straight at me, the wrong way in the cycle lane, wearing headphones and so unaware of any other traffic. One has to stay very alert on any journey on the roads and shared pathways. While the sale of escooters and the removal of their speed restraints is unregulated and those riding them have no road safety training, accidents are so much more likely. I do hope both parties recover fully.
Most scooter riders are courteous and most scooters are capped at 15.5 mph. Yes like cyclists you have the odd loons who whizz around like the cycle lane is their personal race track or are using their phone or oblivious to everything because there headphones are on. E scooters need to be legislated for and it shouldn’t be difficult cap the speed at 15.5mph, make a provisional driving license a must, 1 rider per scooter and of course they should obet the highway code. We want a greener world and for many escooters are a cheap and easy to store option. The rest of the world seems on board.
But remember Madrid, Paris and Melbourne have banned eScooters already.

I almost ran a cyclist over on Lewes road, they were cycling down the pavements and through red lights. We all have unrelated anecdotal stories but clearly as no one was at the scene to witness it other than the 2 riders the most educated thing to say on the matter would be nothing. Lol

Lewes Road Resident – you must be in a minority of cyclists; most of whom are clearly not aware that pedestrians take priority. Most also do not know what give way or stop signs mean either.
And it’s not just e-scooters; pedestrians also have to put up with dangerously driven e-bikes as well. According to an article puplished yesterday “New figures released by 27 police forces to the PA news agency show a steep increase in the number of seizures of e-bikes which have been illegally modified to go faster than 15.5mph – the speed at which they are required to cut out under UK law.” From personal experiance both these and modified e-scooters are regularly driven on pavements with no consideration shown for pedestrians .
We can only hope that people broadly become more considerate. I think the idea of road safety training for anyone riding anything with a motor could help.

There should be a £80 fine for cyclist’s and scooter riders using the pavement! Having nearly been run down by both and had violence threatened when told them to get back to the road! Police response not in our remit!
