Brighton BHS to close this week

Boots refuses to rule out move into BHS when Churchill Square store closes

The BHS shop in Churchill Square, Brighton, is to close this week, the administrators Duff and Phelps said.

It is one of only 35 stores remaining open and 13 of them will be closed tomorrow (Wednesday 24 August) with the last 22 shutting Saturday (27 August).

Since BHS collapsed in April 128 stores have closed, with the failure costing 11,000 jobs, including dozens at the branch in Churchill Square.

Questions over the company’s pensions liabilities and its sale to an unsuitable buyer have been central to a parliamentary inquiry.

A report by MPs described the former owner, Sir Philip Green, as the “unacceptable face of capitalism”.

He drew more than £400 million in dividends from the business before selling it for £1, with a £571 million pension fund deficit.

The man to whom he sold it, Dominic Chappell, was banned from driving for speeding today. He is a serial bankrupt who was described by MPs as a chancer with no retail experience.

Frank Field, the MP who chaired the parliamentary inquiry, has asked the Serious  Fraud Office to investigate the collapse of BHS. It is also possible that Sir Philip Green may be stripped of his knighthood.

My mate Stanislaw works at BHS, and he told me that all of the staff have decided that on their last working day and at the end of their shift, they are all going to walk out of the door for the last time singing ‘I’ve had the time of my life’ from the film Dirty Dancing.

    That’s beautiful, that is….

Sounds creepy and just plain weird to me.

Well, I work at BHS and I’ll tell you something for nothing, I won’t be singing ‘I’ve had the time of my life’ when I leave after my last shift.

Personally, I’ll be grabbing anything that isn’t nailed-down on my way out
