Stanmer travellers prompt councillor to ask about double standards

The arrival of a group of travellers in Stanmer Park prompted a Conservative to question the council’s commitment to treating people equally.

Councillor Dawn Barnett

Councillor Dawn Barnett asked whether those in the group of six or seven vehicles had been given parking fines like dog walkers and locals taking exercise recently.

Brighton and Hove City Council would only say that they were offered pitches at the nearby travellers’ site in Horsdean but declined so today the police moved them on.

Councillor Dawn Barnett said: “There are spaces at Horsdean and they should be moved on there.

“A lot of residents have been fined recently for parking their cars in Stanmer Park while just going for a walk.

“Given the equality laws, I’m sure that the council will be making sure they’re given fines as well so the council can’t be accused of treating people differently.

“Or perhaps the council will let residents take their cars into Stanmer Park now and even stop overnight there?”

The council said: “The traveller households at Stanmer Park have all vacated the land at Stanmer Park.

“They were offered pitches on our transit site but did not take these up.

“So they have to leave the city, in line with the police notices they were served with.”

Why is the Tory Councillor criticising the council for law enforcement and double standards ?
Shouldn’t she be talking to Tory PCC Katy Bourne or Home Secretary Priti Patel ?

So why were they not fined like the others who had parked their “illegally”?. The council should re-imburse those who have been fined, especially as in many cases, that was due to poorly displayed notices about parking. It really is a case of double standards., Nothing new there, though, when it comes to this devious council.

That’s because she talks sense and nobody else on the council is sensible. It’s like banging your head against a brick wall.

To have double standards one would first need to have standards.

Our, unelected, council does not posess this.
