Three more men have been arrested after a mass fight with weapons in Portslade yesterday, taking the total number of arrests to eight.

Six men from Brighton, aged 19 to 23, a man from Worthing, 29, and a man from Oldham, 30, have been arrested on suspicion of affray, violent disorder and assault causing grievous bodily harm (GBH) without intent.

A 24-year-old man from Norfolk remains in hospital with serious injuries in a stable condition.

Police and ambulances were called to Station Road, in Portslade, at around 2.15pm yesterday to reports of a fight with weapons.

Sussex Police said that there would be a continued police presence in the area while inquiries continue.

Yesterday, three men were taken to hospital, two of them in a critical condition, with injuries understood to have been caused by weapons.

A police cordon was in place and buses were diverted around the traffic light crossroads outside the new barber shop HB Barber and the Foghorn pub, where Boundary Road and Station Road meet New Church Road and Franklin Road.

In a statement yesterday, Chief Inspector Jim Smith said: “A fast-moving investigation is under way into this incident but it is believed that all individuals involved are known to one another and there is no threat to the wider public.

“There is likely to be an increased police presence in the area for some time and I would like to thank for the public for their patience and understanding while this is ongoing.

“Anyone with information is asked to report via our online form or via 101, quoting Operation Linden.”
