Brighton and Hove Conservatives condemn spate of attacks on Hove offices

Brighton and Hove’s Conservative offices have become the target of political vandals who are daubing its windows with paint, leaving dog mess on the doorstep and posting “undesirable things” through the letterbox.

graffitiIn the latest attack, graffiti was sprayed over the front of the Sackville Road offices, adding the words “Selfservative . . . @yourexpence.gov” [sic].

The windows were also spray painted during the elections, and a billboard for Tory candidate Graham Cox was also vandalised – the latter the subject of an ongoing court case.

Local party chairman Lee Wares said: “We believe in freedom of speech and expression but it is inexcusable for that to be in the form of criminal damage.

“It is also particularly unpleasant and concerning for staff.

“The country exercised its democratic right to vote in May and returned a majority Conservative Government.

“I accept that will not please everybody and clearly not the person who spray painted our offices but, this is not the way to create change or prevent us from delivering on our manifesto promises.”

Councillor Wares refused to elaborate on what the “undesirable things” posted through the door were, saying it might encourage others to do the same – or worse.

The city council’s Conservative group leader Geoffrey Theobald added: “We don’t always like the outcomes of elections and that is the same for us and many residents of the city who now have a minority Labour administration.

“However, in our democratic country there should be healthy debate and not acts of anti-social behaviour and criminality”.

A spokesman for Sussex Police said the force received a report of graffiti sprayed on to the front of the former Salvation Army Care and Share Shop in Sackville Road, Hove, at 6.13pm on Sunday (July 12).

He said: “It is believed that the damage was done between 5pm on Friday and 5pm on Sunday.

“Anyone who witnessed the incident or has any information about it is asked to email 101@sussex.pnn.police.uk or call 101 quoting serial 1108 of 12/07. Alternatively, you can call the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.”

Political protester Nick Morgan, who admits defacing the Graham Cox billboard on Kingsway in March but denies criminal damage, is due to stand trial at Brighton Magistrates’ Court next month.

Brighton and Hove’s hard working citizens have become the target of political vandals who are tipping young and poor people into deeper poverty, leaving a shattered welfare system and a creaking health service on the doorstep and posting “undesirable things” into the House of Commons.
