Snow coats Brighton and Hove

Snow coats Brighton and Hove

Snow has coated Brighton and Hove this evening (Thursday 31 January) bringing an early end to the bus service – and to a council meeting at Brighton Town Hall. Many schools look likely to be closed tomorrow.

The snow has fallen at #Hollingbury #eastbrighton. Please take extra care on the roads tonight. #bootsontheground @SussexSRP #prevention #cl041 #ch077 #cp351 pic.twitter.com/jRyaAo2JRZ

Brighton and Hove Buses said: “We regret all buses are being withdrawn from service due to the extreme weather, causing dangerous conditions on local roads and as requested by the police.

“We’re sorry for the inconvenience caused and will get buses back out when it is safe to do so.”

The first services to be withdrawn were the 23 to Queen’s Park and the 49 to Moulsecoomb. But as the evening progressed the 7 and 25 routes were running again although the 25 was going only as far as Falmer station.

Sussex Police earlier warned drivers to take care on the roads after stopping a driver who had not properly cleared his windscreen before setting off.

PC Jonathan Ivatt had strong words of advice for the driver, pointing out that uncleared areas could hide hidden hazards.

He said: “With the current cold weather we’re experiencing, it’s a timely reminder to all motorists to make sure they have all-round visibility before setting off on a journey.”

Sussex Police said that drivers should remember Rule 229 of the Highway Code which says

* You must be able to see, so clear all snow and ice from all your windows
* You must ensure that lights are clean and number plates are clearly visible and legible
* Make sure mirrors are clear and that windows are demisted thoroughly
* Remove all snow that might fall off into the path of other road users
* Check your planned route is clear of delays and that no further snowfalls or severe weather are predicted

PC Ivatt said: “It’s common sense to follow these simple steps. Leave extra time to ensure your vehicle is properly prepared and remember to use dipped headlights in poor visibility. The golden rule is see and be seen.”

The @metofficeUK has issued a weather warning. Please be careful in these icy conditions ❄️🥶

We’re gritting roads and will keep an eye on the forecast to ensure they’re treated with salt.

Cold weather shelter for rough sleepers is open tonight.

They’ve been gritting all week yet the roads last night have clearly not been gritted when snow was forecast?

I can’t be bothered to go to work today so will spend Friday in the pub. I’ll be in The Sussex pub from 11am if anyone fancies a pint…

They’ve been gritting the roads for the past few weeks with frost. Yet now we’ve had a few inches of snow, it looks like, there’s no sign of grit on the roads? Clearly not where I live or in these pictures?
    Every year it’s the same!
And you have to somehow crawl into work, with unsympathetic employers, who need the most miniscule excuse to fire you and find someone cheaper than you to do the same job! Still, you lose your job, there’s always unemployment benefit, which is almost impossible to qualify for?
What a wonderful country this is???
