Three fire crews from Brighton were sent to tackle a blaze at a scrap metal site in Newhaven yesterday (Monday 16 September).
Firefighters from Preston Circus and Roedean joined colleagues from Newhaven and Lewes to deal with what was described as “a deep-seated fire”.
The aerial ladder platform from Preston Circus was also sent to the scene, at H Ripley and Co, in East Quay, Newhaven.
East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said that the 999 call came in shortly before 4pm.
The fire service said shortly afterwards: “Four crews from Newhaven, Roedean, Lewes and Preston Circus, along with an aerial ladder platform, were sent to the waste management site at 3.55pm this afternoon.
“They are currently tackling a deep-seated fire involving scrap metal covering an area of 100 metres by 30 metres.
“People are being urged not to come to the area unless they absolutely have to and to keep windows and doors closed.”
At 8pm the fire service added: “Firefighters are making steady progress with the fire and the incident has now been scaled down to two appliances.
“We would still advise nearby residents to keep their windows and doors closed until the smoke plume has cleared.”
