Brighton Pride weekend ends with 44 arrests

Police made 44 arrests over the Brighton Pride weekend while 354 people were treated by St John Ambulance volunteers in Preston Park and in Kemp Town.

The arrests were on suspicion of having drugs, assault, sexual assault, being drunk and disorderly and public disorder.

Chief Superintendent Jane Derrick, from Sussex Police, said: “We welcomed thousands of people into the city and, on the whole, the vast majority of the people attending Pride events were excellent.

“However, officers did have to make a number of arrests across the weekend which sadly is to be expected at such a large event.”

Lessons appear to have been learnt after the chaos at Brighton railway station last year.

Stuart Meek, train services director at Govia Thameslink Railway (GTR) and head of its LGBT+ network, said that seven months of careful planning and close collaboration with Pride partners had been a great success.

He said: “Our staff and passengers have had a fabulous Pride.

“The rainbow queuing system, extended this year into the road outside the station, was praised by Pride-goers.

“This, and our longer trains and additional overnight services, really paid off, keeping queues flowing smoothly which got over 50,000 people home after the event on Saturday night.

“I am so proud of the excellent teamwork of Thameslink, Southern and Gatwick Express staff from across the network, most especially those at Brighton station and our other busy stations, and rail control centre.”

An estimated 55,000 people partied in Preston Park where performers on the main stage included Emeli Sandé and the headline act Kylie Minogue.

Becky Stevens, head of operations at Pride, said: “We want to thank all of our partners, volunteers and teams for their support to deliver ‘Pride with a Purpose’ – the Brighton and Hove Pride Community Festival 2019.

“Every year, we welcome people from Brighton and Hove and further afield to join with us in this annual Pride celebration.

“We work with our statutory partners throughout the year with the aim of delivering a safe, happy and welcoming Pride experience for all.”
