Two flee to safety as arson attack damages Peacehaven mosque

Police have arrested a second man on suspicion of carrying out an arson attack on the mosque in Peacehaven at the weekend.

Tonight (Tuesday 7 October), Sussex Police said: “Detectives investigating a report of arson at a mosque in Peacehaven have made a second arrest.

“Emergency services were called to the building in Phyllis Avenue around 9.50pm on Saturday, 4 October.

“Footage showed two people wearing masks and dark clothing approaching the front door before spraying accelerant on the entrance of the mosque and igniting a fire.

“Sussex Police and East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service promptly attended the scene and were able to extinguish the fire.

“Fortunately, those inside at the time were not injured but significant damage was caused to the mosque and a nearby vehicle.

“A 46-year-old man, from Littlehampton, who was arrested on Monday afternoon (6 October) on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life, has been released on conditional bail while inquiries continue.

“This evening (Tuesday 7 October), a 25-year-old man, of no fixed address, was also arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life. He remains in police custody at this time.”

Detective Chief Inspector Mark Cullimore, from the Surrey and Sussex Major Crime Team, said: “We believe there are people in the community who know who is responsible for this appalling and reckless attack.

“And we are urging anyone with information which could be vital to our investigation to come forward. Please contact us or ring 101, quoting Operation Spey.”

Superintendent Rachel Swinney said: “We continue to work with our local religious communities to support them and ensure their concerns are heard and acted upon.

“Sussex Police takes a zero-tolerance approach to hate crime and there is no place for hate across the county.

“If you have concerns for your safety or experience any hate or criminal behaviour, please speak to an officer or contact us online or by calling 101. Always dial 999 in an emergency.”

Too early to say it was a hate crime they may have had a personal grudge.

You’re right, it wasn’t necessarily a hate crime, it was terrorism and the filth that carried out this disgusting attack should be treated as terrorists.

208 muslims in Peacehaven mosque – Littlehampton has a mosque – Brighton has two and Eastbourne has two mosques. Ever wonder why? Islam has no borders.
